Name: Roy J. Allen Date: March 23rd, 1917 - March 7th, 2009 Obituary: Roy J. Allen of Southampton passed away peacefully at Virtua Health & Rehabilitation in Lumberton on Saturday, March 7th. He was 91. He is survived by his dear friends Marlene E. Coles of Mt. Holly, and Thomas and Deborah Heller of Southampton, along with many other friends from the community. Roy was born in Jamaica, Queens, New York in 1917, moved to Southampton with his late wife Lillian in 1975 and retired from Western Electric after 42 years of service. He served proudly in the United States Navy from March, 1942 to September, 1945. Roy served on a number of ships, survived a ramming by another ship, and participated in actions driving Japanese forces off of United States soil in the islands of Alaska. He also installed and operated early naval radar systems and taught sailors from allied navies in their operations. As one of millions of members of the “greatest generation”, Roy helped save the world from evil and then returned home to build a future for those of us who followed. In his later years Roy enjoyed travel with friends, visits to Atlantic City casinos, and the company of those dear to him. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Those closest to Roy wish to express their gratitude to the staff at Virtua Health & Rehabilitation in Lumberton for the kind and loving care they provided to Roy for almost two years. On Thursday, March 12th, friends may call starting at 6:30 pm at Perinchief Chapels, 438 High Street, Mt. Holly. A Memorial Service celebrating Roy’s life will begin at 8 pm.
