David Delio of Buddtown died Friday December 18th, 2009 at Virtua Memorial Hospital in Mount Holly. He was 64. David was the second of five children of Albert J. Delio Sr. and Phyllis M. Delio. A dutiful son who never shirked his responsibilities, Davy was co-owner of Delio Trucking, the family business, since he was 16. After health reasons forced his retirement from driving in 1999, Dave was the acting company manager, handling scheduling, shipments etc. Dave was also the primary caregiver for his mother, Phyllis until her death in 2003. If you saw the little green bus, you knew that Davy and Phyllis were off on a shopping adventure.
After graduating from Lenape High School in 1964, Davy enlisted in the Navy Seabee Division. After serving one tour in Vietnam, he volunteered for a second tour in an effort to keep his younger brother Matthew from being sent. After successfully completing his military obligation, he rejoined the family business in 1969.
Davy never met a stranger, everyone was a friend. With a quick wit he always found the humor in most situations, refusing to stop living his life to the fullest, even through his own illness. Davy was able to live the last eight years of his life through the generosity of our beloved sister-in-law, Mary Kay Delio. They shared not only the kidney Mary selflessly donated, but a special bond that can never be replaced. He became the older protective brother she had always wished for.
It has been said that “The measure of a man is not in the manner that he lived, but the impact he has on others.” Davy impacted many lives with his generosity of spirit and unfailing sense of humor. He will be undoubtedly missed by all who knew him.
David is survived by his siblings: Albert J. (Butch) Delio (MaryKay) of Buddtown, NJ, Phillip M. (Matt) Delio (Marilyn) of Browns Mills, NJ, Toni R. Lunsford (Frank) of Browns Mills and Phyllis M.(Boo) Hegele (Philip) of Miami, FL. He also leaves behind 2 nieces and 2 nephews: Margaret, Joseph , Samuel and Michelle and eight grand nephews and one grand niece and too many friends to list.
Funeral Services will be held Wednesday at 11 AM at the Perinchief Chapels, 438 High Street, Mount Holly. Interment will be in Lakeview Memorial Park, Cinnaminson. Friends may call Tuesday from 7-9PM and Wednesday from 10-11A at the funeral home. Contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Assoc.
