Alfred Aldridge "Aldy" Williams

Alfred Aldridge (Aldy) Williams died on August 19, 2014 at the Samaritan Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mount Holly. He was 84 years old. Aldy was born George Aldridge Whitley, the son of George and Helen Whitley in Rochester, NY. When his mother remarried after the death of his father, he was adopted by his stepfather, Dr. Ward Williams. At that time, he also changed his first name to Alfred after his maternal grandfather, Alfred Holston Morgan. Aldy graduated from the Allendale School in Rochester. He attended the University of Pennsylvania before joining the US Navy during the Korean War. After he married Emily, he moved to the Village of Rancocas where he started the AA Williams Company, dealing in advertising promotions. Upon the death of Emily’s father, Norman Wiggins, Aldy took over operation of the Sporting Book Service, a mail order business dealing in rare sporting books and prints with an emphasis on hunting and angling. Aldy was an avid hunter and fisherman who introduced the Golden Retriever to the region in the 1960’s. He participated in field trials and bench shows with his dogs Ike and Rex. He was also a champion skeet shooter known in the tri-state area as a winner of many a trophy. He was a member of the NSSA, Ducks Unlimited, Trout Unlimited, and a life member of the NRA. His proficiency in clay target shooting lead to an invitation to the 1968 Olympic trials in San Antonio TX. In addition to being an outdoorsman, Aldy enjoyed a passion for symphonic music. He and Emily were season’s ticket holders for decades to the Philadelphia Orchestra. He was a classical music aficionado and for many years he enjoyed a hobby of recording and archiving music. He was a traveler and explorer logging many fishing and hunting trips and more cultural excursions with Emily who engaged him in her interest in fine art and art history. They traveled together extensively with particular interest in Italy where his grandparents lived and his mother was raised. Aldy is survived by his wife of 60 years, Emily; two daughters and their husbands: Elizabeth & Howard Maresch of Langhorne, PA and Carolynn & Gregg Dunham of Rancocas, NJ; three grandchildren: Carolyn (Andrew) Laich, Jonathan Maresch, & Alexandra Dunham, and a great-grandson Ryan Laich. He is also survived by a sister Tina Patricia Sunstein & a step-brother Henry Williams. A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 on Friday, August 29, at the Rancocas Village Community Center, 203 Main Street, Rancocas, NJ 08073.
