Beulah Hirschlein

Beulah Marie Hirschlein passed away on May 4, 2018. She was born on January 16, 1935 near Mangum Oklahoma to her parents, John Luker and Zelda Luker. She grew up in Oklahoma and graduated from City View School where she loved to play basketball and continued her love for basketball by supporting the OSU Cowgirl Basketball team as well as NBA’s Oklahoma City Thunder. While in high school, she was extensively involved in the local 4-H. Her 4-H interests led her to Oklahoma Agricultural and Mechanical College (now Oklahoma State University) in Stillwater Oklahoma. After several years at OAMC, she left to be with her sister Johnnie when Johnnie’s husband was tragically killed in a railroad accident in Tucson Arizona. While there, Beulah met and married John Arthur Hirschlein, who was serving in the United States Air Force. They moved to NJ for a year before Beulah expressed a desire to return to her former college (OAMC) in Oklahoma. They both decided to attend there and have lived in Oklahoma ever since. Beulah earned three degrees from OSU, including a PhD in Human Development and Family Science. In 1970, Beulah was asked to stay on as a professor in the College of Home Economics (now the College of Human Sciences). She taught many courses including Family Relations and Child Development. Beulah taught one course of particular interest to her, a course titled: Voluntarism. A strong advocate of volunteering, she both volunteered and served as president in many charities. She ultimately volunteered at Elite Repeat in Stillwater Oklahoma, an organization raising millions of dollars in funds for numerous charities. Beulah was a mentor not only to her students, but to her family as well, boasting that she had five great nieces at OSU at one time! After 40+ years of teaching, she retired from OSU. She was highly esteemed by both colleagues and students for her love of teaching, her exceptional course preparedness, her involvement in national family resource organizations, her outreach programs focused on leadership, and her many research projects. As a result of her prolific contributions, the Oklahoma Higher Education Heritage Society honored Beulah when they inducted her into the Oklahoma Higher Education Hall of Fame in 2012. While her family was dearest to her heart, she deeply loved her colleagues, students, and friends at Elite Repeat. Beulah leaves behind her beloved husband, many adoring family members, and countless loving friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, and her four siblings: Allen B Luker, James Luker, C. Virgil Luker, and Johnnie May Luker Rosentretter. On Wednesday, May 16 at 11am, we will celebrate the life of Beulah Hirschlein and say our final good-byes at a graveside service at the Mount Holly Cemetery on Ridgeway Street and Mount Holly Avenue in Mount Holly NJ. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to OSU Foundation marked for The Dr. Beulah Hirschlein Scholarship Fund.
