Charles Matthew Mecum

Charles (Charlie) Matthew Mecum, of Mount Holly, NJ, passed away on Friday, August 12, 2022. He was 64. Born in Japan, on the former Johnson Airforce Base, Charlie came from a miliary family who settled in New Jersey after his father was stationed at McGuire/Fort Dix. He was the son of the late Emma Louise (O’Neal) Mecum and Craig Mansfield Mecum Sr. He is preceded in death by his wife Constance (Dunn) Mecum, daughter Gail Emma (Mecum) Swiney, sister Catherine (Mecum) Snow, and granddaughters, Shelby Lynn Swiney and Maddie Swiney. Charlie’s first love was his late mother, Emma Louise. He adored her. As a single mother, she sacrificed so much for her children. Through her is where Charlie learned the value of family. He chose to raise his children around the corner from the house he grew up in. Charlie was a mechanic for over 40 years, working for Goodyear and GST Transport (Southampton). Charlie was hardworking and loved what he did. He’d help family and friends in-kind with their cars, diagnosing problems with vehicles and repairing cars on the weekends for people in need. Everyone that was fortunate to know him loved him. He was a staple in the community and a great neighbor. He was an avid golfer and had fond memories of playing the French Horn in the Rancocas Valley Marching Band. He even garnered a music scholarship to Ball State University in Indiana for his talent. Above all, Charlie was the most loving dad. He set aspirations not only for himself but for his family. He devoted his life to his kids. Always worked hard to provide for his family, working 3 jobs at one time to keep food on the table. In 2007, when his loving wife, Constance (Connie), passed away from Leukemia, he chose to retire early from Goodyear and be more present daily. Being a father was, without a doubt, his greatest source of achievement and pride in life. Charlie unconditionally loved his kids and dared each to dream big. He also loved every minute spent with his grandchildren. Charlie is survived by his partner, Judy Derrick Bannan; his children, George Johnson, James Mecum, Lauren Mecum, Ernest Mecum, Ryan Mecum, Sean Mecum, and Robert Hager, stepson; his grandchildren, Taylor Mecum, Mason Swiney, Riley Swiney, Lily Mecum, Zachary Mecum, Eloise Mecum, and Jacob Mecum; his great grandchildren, Marcus Swiney and Joel Swiney; brother, Craig Mecum Jr.; sisters, Carolyn (Mecum) Pinkerton and Charlene (Mecum) Piezonka; Son-in-Law, Timothy Smith; Daughters-in-Law, Nicole Martínez-Johnson, Jacquelyn (Potter) Mecum, Jaimie (Breining) Mecum, and Heather (Green) Hager; numerous friends and extended family. Relatives and friends are invited to attend his services at Perinchief Chapels, 438 High St., Mount Holly, NJ, on Friday, August 19, 2022. Viewing 10:00am-12:00pm, with funeral services at 12:00pm and burial to follow at Mount Holly Cemetery.
