Elizabeth "Betsy" Lockhart

Elizabeth “Betsy” Lockhart passed away peacefully at the age of 90 on Thursday, May 8, 2025. She was born in Mount Holly on April 6, 1935, daughter of the late John D. and Catherine Fernwalt. Betsy was a graduate of Mount Holly High School and went to nursing school at Lankenau Hospital in Philadelphia, where she met her late husband, Gordon. Betsy and Gordon married in 1956 and spent the early years of their life together in North Carolina at Camp Lejeune, where Gordon served as a naval medical officer in the Marine Corps. Gordon and Betsy would return to South Jersey to raise their three children at their home in Medford. In addition to being a dedicated wife and mother, Betsy worked alongside her husband as an RN in his office. They made a great team, with her providing not only excellent medical support but also a warm smile and a comforting presence for every patient. She was an amazing gardener and a longtime member of the Pinelands Garden Club of Medford. Gardening brought her immense joy — whether she was caring for her garden in Medford, nurturing plants at their shore house in Barnegat Light, or tending the Memorial Garden at Calvary Lutheran Church. She was also a member of the DAR and the Colonial Dames. Betsy was a gifted cook, known for preparing beautiful meals whether for a simple family dinner, a holiday celebration, or one of their Christmas parties. She also had a passion for baking, and she especially enjoyed preparing a variety of delicious Christmas cookies every holiday season. Her warmth, wit, and sense of humor were truly unmatched. She brought light into the lives of all who knew her, always ready with a laugh, a clever remark, and a wink. Her quiet strength and resilience were an inspiration. Betsy’s husband, Gordon, passed away in January 2024. She is survived by her two daughters: Nancy Ben and Elaine Molnar, three granddaughters: Leah Ben (Sean Silvester), Grace Ben, and Lauren Molnar, and great granddaughter: Willow Molnar. She is also survived by her sister, Bonnie Hill (Allan Hill). Betsy was predeceased by her son, Charles Lockhart, and her brother, John “Jack” D. Fernwalt (Nancy Fernwalt). She will be deeply missed by all whose lives she touched. A Memorial Service will be held privately.
