Mathlide Vengen

Mathilde Vengen, from Westampton, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, November 7, 2018 at the Samaritan Hospice in Voorhees after a lengthy illness. She was 80. Born in Langendiebach, Germany, she came to the United States knowing very little English but full of excitement to raise her family with her husband, Master Sgt. Edward Vengen. Stationed at Ft. Dix, and then settling into her home in Westampton, she worked as a waitress at various local restaurants and as a presser for Riverview Sportswear in Willingboro for many years. She was a longtime member of Holy Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Burlington. She loved playing bingo, finding a bargain at yard sales, gardening, and cooking a large meal for her family, all made with love. She was always excited to see plums in the store – time to make her famous plum cake! She was a no-nonsense, practical and strong woman who will be missed dearly by her family. She is survived by her loving siblings in Germany, Hans Schafer, Christa Broll and Irene Viel (Erich). She was pre-deceased by her husband Edward, daughters Karol and Barbara, siblings Augusta, Erika, Heinrich, Horst, Lisel, Margarete and Maria. She is survived by her children: Linda Cirillo (Stephen) of Lumberton, NJ; Viktoria Pallante (Joseph) of Eastampton, NJ; Edward Vengen, Jr. of Westampton, James Vengen (Barbara Shirley) of Mt. Holly, and Trudy Rivera (Orlando) of Westampton, NJ. She was a devoted Oma to: Stephanie Shemeley (James), Katie Chaney (Craig), Ryan Cirillo (Amanda), Joanna Cirillo, Andrew and Orlando Rivera Jr., Lydia Dieppa, and 5 great-grandchildren: Justin Shemeley, Elaina and Adam Cirillo, Connor and Clark Chaney. She is also survived by a longtime friend, Anna Hare. A Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, November 15th at 11:00 AM at Holy Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, 1308 Mt Holly Rd, Burlington, NJ. Relatives and friends may visit with the family on Thursday from 10-11 AM at the Church. Interment in Beverly National Cemetery will be private.
