Thomas Francis Callahan Jr

Thomas Francis Callahan Jr, was born in New York City on October 9, 1966 and passed away at NYU-Winthrop Hospital on Saint Patrick’s Day (Sunday, March 17, 2019) at the age of 52. Thomas was raised in Freeport, Long Island, and spent his childhood along the Long Island Sound. He truly enjoyed spending time on the water and fancied himself both a fisherman and boat enthusiast. He likely adopted this passion for the water from his father who maintained a few boats at his waterfront home. While in high school, Thomas received the calling to serve his country, and upon graduation he enlisted in the United States Army Reserve serving as a Transportation Specialist. He also competed for, and was awarded a full scholarship from the Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) and attended Saint John’s University. Thomas took pride in his military education and became an early member of the prestigious Merrill’s Marauders, an organization comprised of exemplary Officer Candidates that serve as peer role models to junior candidates. Thomas graduated from Saint John’s University with a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice, was honored as a Distinguished Military Graduate, and received a Regular Army commission as a Second Lieutenant within the Military Intelligence Regiment. Thomas also became a qualified Anti-Terrorism Instructor and routinely was called upon to assist military organizations to improve their security, readiness, and preparedness posture. Following his military service, Thomas put his Criminal Justice degree to work and embarked on a new career with the City of New York Probation Department. He excelled in this new career field and quickly advanced as a Senior Probation Officer, Training Officer, Team Leader, and was selected to serve in the highly coveted Warrants Unit. During the September 11, 2001 cowardly attack on the World Trade Center, Thomas’ team provided immediate support to the First Responders and remained on site ensuring the freedom of movement of critical personnel. For their efforts, Thomas and his team had been recognized for exemplary service by the City and State of New York, the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the United States’ Departments of Defense and Department of Justice. He was preceded in death by his mother Irene Mailhan, father Thomas Francis Callahan, step mother Nancy Callahan, and is survived by his only son Thomas F. Callahan, III of Lumberton, NJ. Relatives and Friends are invited to visit with the family on Saturday afternoon from 1:00-3:00 PM at the Perinchief Chapels, 438 High Street, Mount Holly. A prayer service will follow at 3:00 PM. Interment will be private.
