Miriam “Mimi” W. Mengel of Mount Holly passed away on Saturday, December 25, 2021 at her home. She was 95 years young. Born in Denver, PA, Mrs. Mengel was the daughter of the late John and Irene Witman. She graduated from Kutztown University in 1948, which is where she met her husband of 72 years, John A. Mengel, upon dropping a tray of frogs on him in a biology class. Miriam moved to Mount Holly in 1948 where she started her career as an Art teacher in the public-school system which at the time was still functioning under the oppression of segregation. She then continued to Eastampton School where she was a long time K-8 Art teacher and remained until retirement. Her passions were her family, art in all forms but especially painting, knitting, rug hooking, sewing and needlework. Her other love was cooking, which brought her and loved ones much pleasure. She celebrated every holiday from the most mundane to the most magical with great flare. Earlier years were filled with camping trips in a VW bus across the US and in her retirement years, she and John traveled to many overseas locations. She is predeceased by parents John and Irene Witman of Reading, PA; sister Dorace Leinbach (& Ralph Leinbach) of Reading, PA; daughter, Jill Harker (& John Harker) of Mount Holly, NJ; and, grandson, Nicholas Spennato of Mount Holly, NJ. She is survived by her husband, John A. Mengel of Mount Holly, NJ; daughters Clarene Spennato (Daniel Chaneske) of Mechantville, NJ and June Mengel (Jeffrey Hollinger) of Strasburg, PA; and, a son John (Jack) Mengel, Jr (Gail) of Garden Ridge, TX; 7 Grandchildren: Nicole Spennato, Lisa Garron and Jennifer Harker all of Mount Holly; Angela Mengel (Jason England) of Austin, TX, John A Mengel III of San Antonio, TX, David (Libby) Mengel of Lakewood, OH and Mark Mengel of Austin, TX. Also, surviving are 5 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild: Amber Anaya (Analisia), Joel Anaya, Ryker England, Myla and Harlow Mengel. At this time, Funeral Services and Burial in the BGWCD Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery will be held privately. A memorial service will be held at a later date to celebrate her long and full life. If desired, contributions in her memory may be made to a religious or charitable organization of your choice.
