Gladys Lowden Metz

Gladys E. Lowden Metz (nee Kauffman) of Medford, NJ and formally of Mt. Holly, NJ and Burlington, NJ, passed away peacefully on May 7th, 2015 surrounded by her loving family after a brief illness. She was 91 years of age. Born in Jobstown, NJ, she was the daughter of the late Clarence F. and Laura B. Kauffman. Beloved wife of the late Arthur H. Metz and the late Jay H. Lowden. Dear mother of Robert Lowden (Candace), Nancy Hustis (Bruce) and Jay Lowden (Dianne). Proud Grandmother of Larry Hodgkins (Anita), Laura Capra (James), Jeffrey Lowden , Jessica Floyd (Charles) and Kimberly Lowden (Michael Roberts). Great-grandmother of Emma Capra, Scarlett and Cassidy Lowden. Pre-deceased by a brother, Paul Kauffman, Survived by her sisters, Jane Miller, Marian Sivo and Laura Rossi, as well as her many nieces and nephews. She will be sorely missed by not only her family, but her many friends of all ages, especially close family friend, Albert Brown. Gladys graduated from Pemberton High School, attended Westhampton College/University of Richmond, VA, graduating from Trenton State College, NJ. She went on to teach English at Rancocas Valley Regional HS for 21 years, opening up the eyes and minds of hundreds and hundreds of students to the great classics of American Literature. Many of her former students continued to keep in touch with her throughout the years by visiting, writing letters and inviting her to their class reunions, as she was especially fond of the Class of ’68! An avid reader, Gladys enjoyed engaging conversation, playing bridge, world travel and a glass of white wine with ice! She was a long-time, devoted member of AAUW, the Westhampton College Alumnae Assoc., the Mt. Holly and Burlington County Historical Societies, the Alice Paul Institute and the NJREA. Interment will be private. A memorial service in her honor will be held at 11:30 AM, Saturday July 11th, 2015 at the Protestant Community Church Cathedral of the Woods, 100 Stokes Rd., Medford Lakes, NJ 08055. 609-654-4220. A reception luncheon will immediately follow the service at the church. The family requests that contributions be made in memory of Gladys Kauffman Lowden Metz to the May L.
