Harold L. Colburn Jr.

Dr. Harold L. Colburn of Mount Laurel died Tuesday, May 1, 2012, at the Brandywine Senior Living Center in Moorestown. He was 86. Dr. Colburn was born in Orange, N.J., the son of the late Dr. Harold Colburn Sr. and Claire Strait Colburn. He was a 1947 graduate of Princeton University, received his M.D. from Albany Medical College in Albany, N.Y. and served his internship at the Hospital Center in Orange. From 1950 to 1952, he served in the U.S. Navy at Newport, R.I. and in Sasebo, Japan. He did graduate work and his residency in Dermatology at the Univ. of Pennsylvania and was certified in 1956. Dr. Colburn practiced Dermatology in Camden, Moorestown and Mount Holly from 1955 until 1994. He was former chief of Dermatology at Virtua Memorial Hospital in Mount Holly, at Zurbrugg Hospital in Riverside and at Cooper Hospital in Camden. He was a past trustee of the Medical Society of New Jersey and past president of the Burl. Co. Medical Society. Dr. Colburn was a Burlington County Freeholder from 1971 to 1984 and was Director of the Board in 1976, 1980 and 1984. He was elected to the New Jersey Assembly from the 8th District in 1984 and served in the Assembly until 1995, when he left office to accept the Post of Director of the State Board of Medical Examiners. He was Chairman of the N.J. Assembly Health and Human Services Committee several times. Preceded in death by his wife, Jane, Dr. Colburn is survived by two children, Robert and his wife, Robin, of Mount Laurel and Suzanne Bartoli of Burlington Township; four grandchildren, Trevor Colburn, Kimberly Colburn Gallagher (Ryan), Jesse Atkins (Amy) and Christopher Bartoli; and two great-grandchildren, Owen and Colby Atkins. He is also survived by a sister, Nancy Stevens and her husband, William, of Hackettstown, N.J. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 8 at the First Presbyterian Church of Moorestown, 101 Bridgeboro Rd., Moorestown. Friends are invited to visit with the family from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. Tuesday at the church. Interment will be in the church cemetery.
