Jerome A Sweeney

Jerome A. Sweeney, 87, passed away peacefully on Monday, February 5, 2018 in Mount Holly, NJ. Jerry was born September 15, 1930 in Paterson, NJ, the sixth of ten children of William Anthony and Kathryn Sweeney. He graduated from St. Joseph’s High School in Paterson in 1949. After graduation, Jerry served honorably in the US Navy. He then worked for ITT in electronics while also attending Rutgers University, University College, Paterson Division, graduating with high honors in 1957. He continued his formal education at Seton Hall University, earning his Juris Doctor in 1968. Jerry began his law career in Mount Holly, NJ, working as a public defender for Burlington County, where he met Beverly Davis of Lumberton, NJ. Soon after, Jerry and Beverly married and grew their family together with four children. In 1978, Jerry opened his own law practice on Washington Street in Mount Holly. He also maintained a robust interest in politics. He served as a councilman in Mount Holly from 1982-84. He also made a run for NJ State Assembly in 1989. In his younger years, Jerry played mediocre golf and coached baseball. He was an avid reader and loved spending time with his family. He taught his children to tie their own shoes, play chess, ice skate, and how to drive. He was a great homework helper too, like having a walking encyclopedia at your fingertips. In his later years, he and Beverly attended the Quaker Friends Meeting House in Mount Holly, where they met and made many friends. Jerry is survived by his beloved wife, Beverly; his children, Timothy, Sally (Joel) Salvatorelli, Michael (Danielle) Sweeney, and Becky (Matt) DeFranciso; his grandchildren, Kevin, David, Killian, Roarke, Madison, and Ryder; his siblings, Theresa (Harry) Turner of Toms River, NJ, Cathy Capasso of Minnesota, and Loretta Netzhimer of Alabama; 30 nieces and nephews and many friends. Special thanks to the devoted staff of Active Day of Delran, the VA Hospital in Philadelphia, Samaritan Healthcare & Hospice at Virtua Memorial in Mount Holly, and the many others who have shared time with Jerry.
