Margaret Serwaa

Margaret Serwaa was born on July 2, 1950, in Accra, Ghana, to Mr. Enoch Kwame Boamah and Madam Akosua Badu, in the town of Kwahu Abetifi. The eldest of five siblings, Margaret spent her early childhood in Nsawam under the care of her aunties before returning at the age of fourteen to join her parents and siblings in Adabraka, Accra — a homecoming that would mark the beginning of a life defined by resilience, warmth, and an unshakeable love for family. Margaret received her foundational education at All Saints Middle School, completing her Form Four studies before going on to Accra Secretarial School, where she developed her skills in typing and office administration. These skills opened doors far beyond the borders of Ghana, and Margaret would go on to live a life of remarkable breadth. She traveled to Lagos, Nigeria, then to Damascus, Syria, and eventually to Japan — experiences that shaped her deeply and that she would cherish and speak of with great pride for the rest of her life. She was particularly fond of her time in Japan, embracing its culture, its cuisine, and its way of life with characteristic openness. It was during her time in Japan that Margaret’s faith was also nurtured, as she became a member of Bethel Church — a spiritual home she would carry with her wherever life led. She returned to Ghana in 2005 before making the journey that would bring her to her final home: New Jersey, in the United States, where she settled with her family and became a member of Bethel Church in Newark. In the United States, Margaret poured her heart into her work as a caregiver — a role that suited her perfectly, because caring for others was simply who she was. Those who worked alongside her and those she served spoke of her in the highest terms: special, kind, someone who always went above and beyond. Her work was never just a profession; it was an extension of the love she gave freely to everyone around her. But it was at home — and most often in her kitchen — where Margaret was most fully herself. Cooking was her greatest passion and her most eloquent expression of love. She moved with confidence between rich, aromatic Ghanaian dishes and the delicate flavors of Japanese cuisine she had lovingly learned abroad. Her kitchen was never closed. Strangers became guests, guests became family, and everyone who sat at her table left nourished in more ways than one. Margaret kept God and family at the center of every decision she made. She sacrificed her time, her resources, and her energy for the people she loved without hesitation or complaint. She was a woman who believed — truly and practically — in doing unto others as you would have them do unto you. That phrase was not just something she said; it was the quiet rule by which she lived. Among her proudest accomplishments was becoming a homeowner both in the United States and in Ghana — a testament to her determination and the life she built on her own terms. She leaves behind her three children, Doreen, Eunice, and Michael Danquah; her siblings Grace, Elizabeth, Ruben, Nana, John Kwesi, and Apostle Dr. David Benefo; a large and loving family of nieces, nephews, and extended family spanning Ghana and the United States; and the memory of Charles Yaw Danquah, the father of her children, who preceded her in death. Margaret Serwaa passed from this life on June 1, 2026, at Virtua Mount Holly Hospital in Mount Holly, New Jersey, at the age of seventy-five. She leaves behind a legacy not written in monuments or titles, but in every person she welcomed, every meal she cooked, every life she touched, and every heart that still carries her warmth. Friends and relatives are invited to attend a viewing for Margaret on Friday, June 19, 2026 from 10am-12pm at Perinchief Chapels, 438 High Street, Mount Holly, NJ 08060. Funeral services for Margaret will following the viewing at 12pm at Perinchief Chapels. Interment will follow the services at the Evergreen Cemetery, in Lumberton.
